Screening & diagnostic

2D & 3D Mammography

State-of-the-art, low-dose 3D mammography (tomosynthesis with C-view) on Clarity HD ultra-high resolution technology, the first in Maryland.

Screening

  • For women with no breast concerns
  • Usually 4 images (8 with implants)
  • 15–40% fewer false alarms with 3D

Diagnostic

  • New symptoms or closer follow-up
  • Magnified or 3D spot views
  • Same-day ultrasound when needed

Contrast-Enhanced Mammography

CEM combines a digital mammogram with iodinated contrast dye. The dye collects in abnormal blood vessels, revealing lesions that a mammogram alone may miss.

Who it helps

  • Dense or extremely dense breasts
  • High-risk women who can’t have MRI
  • Recent abnormal mammogram
  • Newly diagnosed breast cancer

Your visit

  • Results usually read while you’re here
  • Can be combined with 3D in one visit
  • Physician referral required

Physician-performed

Breast Ultrasound

Every breast ultrasound is performed by a fellowship-trained physician, not a technologist. Ultrasound supplements your mammogram; it doesn’t replace it.

Screening

  • Full scan of both breasts
  • Dense breasts with elevated risk

Diagnostic

  • A palpable lump or new symptom
  • A finding on your mammogram

Minimally invasive

Ultrasound-Guided Biopsy & Aspiration

Under local anesthesia, ultrasound guides a small needle to collect fluid, cells or tissue, so you get a clear answer without surgery.

Procedures

  • Cyst aspiration
  • Fine needle aspiration
  • Core needle biopsy

What to expect

  • Area cleaned and numbed
  • Small tissue samples collected
  • A tiny marker placed at the site

Mammography-guided

Stereotactic & Tomosynthesis Biopsy

For findings seen best, or only, on your mammogram. 2D or 3D images guide a vacuum-assisted device to the exact spot.

Stereotactic

  • 2D mammographic guidance
  • Can sometimes remove the entire visible lesion

Tomosynthesis-guided

  • For lesions seen only on 3D

Advanced

CEM-Guided Biopsy

When a finding shows up on contrast-enhanced mammography, contrast is given through an IV and a vacuum-assisted device samples it under stereotactic guidance.

Best for

  • Lesions seen only with contrast
  • Targeting CEM findings precisely

What to expect

  • IV contrast and local anesthesia

Common questions

Before your appointment

Have a question we haven’t answered? Call us at 410-544-3331.

How quickly will I get my results?

Results are typically available within 30 hours and often the same day. If more imaging or a biopsy is needed, it’s usually scheduled within days.

What is 3D mammography?

3D mammography (tomosynthesis) takes multiple low-dose images to create a layered view of the breast. 3D screening has been linked to a 40% increase in invasive cancer detection and 15–40% fewer false alarms.

I have dense breasts. What are my options?

Dense tissue can hide cancers on a standard mammogram. Depending on your risk, your doctor may recommend screening breast ultrasound or contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) in addition to your 3D mammogram.

How should I prepare for my exam?

Bring your insurance card. For contrast-enhanced mammography, avoid deodorant, talc, lotions and oils on the day of your exam, and drink plenty of water beforehand.

Does insurance cover CEM?

Insurance covers diagnostic CEM. Screening CEM is considered off-label and is not covered by insurance; it is available for $289, due at the time of the exam. A physician referral is required.
